⭐️THIS SATURDAY⭐️ Festive midwinter wreath ⭐️THIS SATURDAY⭐️
Festive midwinter wreath making
✨✨✨
Join us this Saturday from 11 - 1pm for festive wreath making to celebrate the midwinter season. We'll make a wreath ring from willow which you can decorate with foraged materials gathered around the site. You can bring your own too - you can use scented plants like rosemary, lavender and eucalyptus for their silvery foliage and beautiful smell, ivy and holly of course, and anything else that's sturdy enough to wrap and weave. You can take your wreath home and refresh the foliage in the coming weeks to keep it bright. Here's some photos from last year for inspiration - we used teasels, old man's beard, ivy, holly, rose hips and lots more....
🌲🌿🌲
Brightening your door or home with evergreen foliage in these darker winter months reminds us of the life waiting to grow beneath the soil, perhaps helping to keep us connected to the inner seeds that need nourishment and care to make it through to the Spring.
🌲🌿🌲
Come and join us!

A few photos from last weekend’s eco gathering. A few photos from last weekend’s eco gathering. Peter spotted the plants not already on our survey list - bittersweet nightshade, black nightshade and a euphorbia, we uncovered a little more of the path along the river, continued filling new compost bins, littler picking of course! And spruced up the temporary compost toilet 💩 thanks to all who came down, see you next month!
This Saturday it's our regular eco gathering. We’ll be doing some plant identification, creating some new signage for the temporary toilet and continuing to cut back some budleia and wildflower growth to allow new growth to come through in Spring. Come down! Link to let us know you’ll be there in the bio. 🌿💦🌿
Many thanks to all who joined us for the Channelse Many thanks to all who joined us for the Channelsea Conservation event last Sunday, in celebration of @antiuniversitynow and part of our on-going work of observation and stewardship of the Long Wall Ecology Garden and the Channelsea river.
💦🌿💦
A beautiful day with the wider community coming together under the anti-university umbrella, and very heartwarming to meet more local activists and environmentalists who we hadn’t met before, alongside friends and regulars. It was a great day and we worked hard together to achieve a lot. It was the first time we used our pennywort gathering system, giving us a better idea of how to begin to tackle this vigourous species on the water, and we’re happy to report the system worked really well! With another day out on the river we could achieve significant reduction in the growth, helping to keep it in check and encourage fish and other plant species to flourish. It was also great to get up close to the pennywort, it’s a beautiful plant, with a strong root system and a lovely leaf shape, and it felt good to begin this process of recycling its nutrients back into the community orchard.
🍎🌿🍎
We’ll be continuing the work on land this Saturday at our Monthly Eco Gathering, 11 - 1pm, let us know you’re coming via the link in the bio!

Join us for a day of conservation work on the Channelsea river and at the Long Wall Ecology garden. We have a new floating pontoon ready to get out onto the water to bring in the pennywort, a vigorous species that populates the water's surface blocking out light and oxygen for other species. We’ll be pulling it out of the water and into the compost bins on land, ready to break down and become food for the apple trees.
🌿🌿🌿
We'll also have jobs on land to complete, cutting back wildflowers that have gone to seed to make way for more next year, cutting back bramble and buddleia and other strong growing plants to maintain a healthy balance of species.

Inspiring day on the river today - started out wit Inspiring day on the river today - started out with a walk and talk with @thames21 and @cody_dockers, from Bow Locks to the Channelsea, then down the Lea, identifying conservation opportunities for these tidal rivers. Then back to the Long Wall Ecology Garden for an afternoon of tree care and watering, and discovering one of the vandalised trees from a few weeks ago has sprouted a couple of new leaves, a hopeful sign that it will survive the damage. What do you think @theorchardproject? 🤞💚

We love how it references both the wild nature of the river and the industrial heritage in the area, and hope you all like it too! We know this area has long been loved by many (including us) and this sign feels to us like a gift back to the space, and an appreciative gesture to all the beings at home there.
